The Role of Airbags in Vehicle Safety

Engineers design airbags to deploy in the event of a collision, inflating rapidly to cushion the impact between a person’s body and the vehicle’s interior. Airbags work in conjunction with seat belts to reduce the risk of serious injuries, such as head trauma, whiplash, and broken bones. However, airbags are not foolproof. Under certain circumstances, airbags can cause injuries ranging from mild burns and abrasions to more severe injuries like broken bones, concussions, or even fatalities.

Common Airbag-Related Injuries

Airbags, while intended to protect occupants, can lead to a range of injuries:

• Facial Injuries. Airbags deploy with significant force, which can result in lacerations, bruising, or fractures to the face.
• Chest Injuries. The force of an airbag can cause bruising or even broken ribs. In some severe cases, the airbag can lead to internal injuries, such as damage to the lungs or heart.
• Neck and Spine Injuries. Airbag deployment can lead to whiplash or more serious spinal cord injuries if the neck and head are violently jolted upon impact.
• Burns and Abrasions. The chemicals used to inflate the airbag can sometimes cause burns or abrasions on the skin, particularly if a person is very close to the steering wheel or dashboard when the airbag deploys.
• Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI). Airbags help protect against head injuries. However, in certain situations, airbags can cause problems. If a person sits too close to the airbag or if it opens with too much force, a person can suffer a concussion or other serious brain injuries.
• Psychological Trauma. Even when physical injuries are minor, airbag deployment in a car accident can cause severe emotional distress, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Causes of Airbag Injuries

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has reported that airbags have saved thousands of lives since they became standard in vehicles. Several factors can contribute to an airbag injury including:

• Proximity to the Airbag. If the driver or passenger is sitting too close to the airbag at the time of deployment, they may be more likely to experience significant injury. This is especially common in cases where the driver’s seat is adjusted too far forward.
• Airbag Malfunctions. Airbags are sophisticated devices with complex sensors and systems designed to deploy when certain conditions are met. Malfunctions or defects can cause airbags to deploy unnecessarily or fail to deploy when they should.
• Defective Airbags. Sometimes airbags are manufactured with design flaws or material defects that make them prone to causing injuries. Notable examples of defective airbags include the Takata airbag recall, which affected millions of vehicles worldwide. These defective airbags could deploy with excessive force or even rupture, leading to shrapnel injuries.
• Improper Seatbelt Use. Seatbelts and airbags work in tandem. If a person is not wearing their seatbelt or wears it incorrectly, they may be at greater risk of injury when the airbag deploys.
