Georgia Faces Persistent and Growing Pedestrian Fatalities

State traffic safety data compiled from the federal Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) shows that drivers killed 345 pedestrians in motor vehicle crashes in Georgia in 2022—a 12 percent increase over 2021’s 307 fatalities and a roughly 10 percent increase from 279 in 2020. The Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) reports that national pedestrian fatalities in 2024 remain nearly 20 percent higher than 2016 levels, even as overall traffic deaths have leveled off.

Metro Atlanta shoulders a disproportionate share of these fatalities. The interstate corridors in Fulton and DeKalb counties—including the Connector, I-285, I-20, and I-85—have frequently appeared in recent reports of fatal pedestrian crashes, often involving people walking in or near travel lanes during overnight and early morning hours.

When a crash kills a pedestrian, Georgia law provides a framework for the family.
