Why E-Bike and Bicycle Crashes Cause Such Severe Injuries

A collision between a car and a bicycle creates a mismatch in every way that matters. A rider has no crumple zone, seat belt, airbag, or steel frame to protect them. Bicyclist deaths on U.S. roads have also climbed, with roughly 1,166 bicyclists killed nationally in 2023. In Georgia, the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety reported 22 bicyclist fatalities in 2023, down from 29 in 2022 — a modest improvement in a state where pedestrians and cyclists cause an increasing share of overall traffic deaths.

The Local Picture — A Corridor Built for Cars

Veterans Memorial Highway is a wide, high-volume arterial running through Mableton and the Six Flags corridor toward Atlanta. Like many suburban arterials in metro Atlanta, city planners designed it primarily to move vehicles quickly, with additions of sidewalks, crosswalks, and signal timing often incomplete and added later. People on foot and two wheels regularly must cross several lanes of fast-moving traffic to reach bus stops, jobs, or shopping centers on the other side.

This context matters when a crash occurs. Police reported that the e-bike crossed against the pedestrian signal — a detail under investigation. Traffic engineers recognize that where crossing opportunities are far apart and signal cycles are long, non-motorists face real pressure to cross when a gap appears. Determining fault in a case like this requires examining signal phasing, sightlines, vehicle speed, driver attention, and the physical layout of the intersection.
