Why Left-Turn Crashes Are So Dangerous for Riders

Troopers describe collisions with other vehicles as the single most common cause of motorcycle deaths. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) most recent motorcycle fact sheet, there were 3,419 fatal two-vehicle crashes involving a motorcycle and another vehicle in 2023. In 46 percent of them — 1,588 crashes — the other vehicle was turning left while the motorcycle was going straight, passing, or overtaking.

The reasons are largely about perception. A motorcycle presents a narrow profile, which makes it easy to miss entirely in a scan of oncoming traffic and genuinely hard to judge for speed and distance even when a driver does see it. A rider who looks small in the windshield often reads as farther away and slower than they actually are. Drivers waiting to turn left are also under time pressure, watching for a gap, and a bike can disappear behind an A-pillar or another vehicle in the moment the decision gets made.

For the rider, the physics are unforgiving. A motorcyclist has no crumple zone, no airbag, and no seatbelt. NHTSA data shows that per 100 million vehicle miles traveled in 2023, the fatality rate for motorcyclists was nearly 28 times that of passenger car occupants. When a rider strikes a turning vehicle broadside, the bike stops and the rider does not — which is why ejection, like what troopers described here, is so often part of the story.

The Georgia Picture

Motorcycle crashes are not a rare problem in this state. NHTSA recorded 196 motorcyclist fatalities in Georgia in 2023. Georgia requires helmet use for all riders regardless of age. Motorcyclists in Georgia wore helmets in 91 percent of fatal crashes in 2023 (helmet status known). This data reflects one of the highest rates in the country. Georgia’s helmet law helps save lives and prevent traumatic brain injuries. Helmets prevent head injuries. However, they do not prevent the spinal, orthopedic, and internal injuries that result when a bike throws a rider at high speed.

Intersections carry outsized risk. Thirty-seven percent of motorcyclist fatalities nationally in 2023 happened at intersections, and 92 percent occurred on non-interstate roads — surface arterials like Highway 92, not limited-access highways. Late-summer evenings in Georgia are peak riding conditions, which puts more bikes on exactly those roads at exactly the hours when left-turn conflicts are most common.

What Follows a Serious-Injury Crash

When someone survives a crash like this one but with severe injuries, the road ahead is often long and expensive. A helicopter transport, trauma-center admission, surgery, and rehabilitation can generate six-figure medical bills before anyone has determined who was at fault. Wages stop. Families reorganize around caregiving.

Under Georgia law, an injured person generally has two years from the date of the injury to bring a personal injury claim, and property damage claims carry a four-year limit. Georgia follows a modified comparative negligence rule that allows an injured person to recover damages as long as they bear less than 50 percent of the fault. The court reduces any award by their share of responsibility. In a left-turn collision, that analysis usually turns on right-of-way — whether the turning driver yielded as required, and whether the rider was traveling at a lawful speed and visible to oncoming traffic. The crash investigation, scene evidence, and witness accounts answer those questions, not first impressions.

In this case, none of that has been determined publicly. The Georgia State Patrol investigation is ongoing, and the most important fact right now is simply that a rider is at Grady fighting through serious injuries.
