Why Pedestrian-Train Collisions Are So Dangerous

Collisions between trains and people on foot are almost always catastrophic. A fully loaded freight train can weigh thousands of tons and, even at moderate speeds, often needs a mile or more to come to a complete stop once the engineer applies the emergency brake. That means a train crew frequently has little to no ability to avoid a person on the tracks, even when they see them well in advance. Unlike a car crash, where a driver may be able to swerve or brake in time, a pedestrian-train collision leaves almost no margin for error.

Railroad tracks also present hazards that aren’t always obvious. Multiple tracks can carry trains traveling in either direction, at different speeds, and trains are often quieter and faster than people expect, making it difficult to judge how much time is available to cross safely. Distraction, headphones, low visibility at night, and impairment can all increase the risk of someone misjudging a train’s speed or distance.

According to the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), as compiled by Operation Lifesaver, highway-rail grade crossing collisions and pedestrian trespassing on tracks together account for more than 95 percent of all railroad-related fatalities nationwide. As of this writing, authorities have not released the identity, age, or gender of the person killed.

A Busy Commuter Corridor

The stretch of track near Feldwood Road, Stacks Road, and Roosevelt Highway sits along a corridor used heavily by South Fulton and Union City residents during early morning commuting hours. CSX operates active freight lines through this section of the county. Rail crossings in the area typically include warning signage. However, officials have not publicly detailed the specific safety infrastructure at the exact site of this collision. The incident closed a lane of Roosevelt Highway for a time, underscoring how quickly a single collision on the tracks can also disrupt surrounding roadways and morning traffic.
