The stretch of Murphy Avenue where this happened runs through a mix of commercial properties and residential neighborhoods in southwest Atlanta, an area served by an active Norfolk Southern freight line. Like many older industrial rail corridors that predate much of the surrounding development, the tracks run at grade through areas where people live, work, and walk — often without the same level of separation or signage found at busier, more heavily trafficked crossings elsewhere in the metro area.
